My Story

Growing up in China with pentatonic sound, Colin learned to play guitar by mostly listening to western bands like The Eagles, SRV, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Van Halen. Soon after, he was drawn to soul and funk music such as Tower of Power, Earth, Wind and Fire, Nile Rodgers among many others. He cites Antonio Carlos Jobim as his favorite composer and it has greatly influenced his own writing style with the use of bossa nova chords and rhythms. When combining these elements, it creates a unique sound of Colin's music.

As a self-taught musician, Colin didn’t pick up his first instrument (a $6 guitar, really?) until age 16. He soon realized his love for music and couldn't stop playing since then. He also learned playing keyboard, drums, harmonica, saxophone, bass and percussions. After acquiring a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Colin decided to follow his true passion and pursue a career in music, a harder but eventually more rewarding path to take. Since then, he’s been working in the music industry in many various roles: guitarist, songwriter, arranger, producer, sound designer, and recording/mixing engineer. Later he joined NYU's music technology program and obtained his Master’s Degree in Music in 2015.

In a time where music production is becoming more like the fast food industry, Colin still holds to high measures of quality, clarity, depth, definition and detail. Today, Colin is based in the NYC metro area and works with an ever-widening group of talented musicians both locally and remotely. Besides music, Colin also likes history, archeology, geography and philosophy. He enjoys reading, traveling, creative cooking and is on his way of becoming a real foodie.
